Ready or not, here I come

As Irene is approaching the NE coast, I finally decided to get my hurricane shopping done at 7 pm on a Friday night. I was dreading it. If anything comparable to my Houston experiences, I expected people to have stripped the entire supermarket naked. To my surprise, my horror was completely unjustified. I leisurely wandered around, found bread, candles, some dry food here and there, something to drink, and plenty of fruit. I spent about five minutes at the cash register and left without one curse on my lips. Now I’m home and still stunned. Since when is hurricane shopping supposed to be civilized?

Boston

Boston. Finally. It seems like eternity that I had access to a real bed. Admittedly, the bed situation is not completely resolved yet, but most of the other ordinary life casualties are. A lovely house, lovely neighbors, access to local coffee shop, supermarket, pub, and hairdresser. What is missing I wonder?

The northeastern part of the US seems to have a lot of offer. I am not talking about the climate (mom, send winter clothes, pleeeassse), rather the serendipity of discovering some new place every week. Besides Boston, which is still waiting to be fully explored, I can recommend New Hamphire and Maine already. P-town is next on list. While November/December might not be the best time to do sightseeing, one is still able to enjoy the beauty of it all. Particularly with some hot chocolate and a fireplace involved.

Summer MIS class

The IT Crowd

Only three seasons are out to date, unfortunately, but as a little Irish birdie told me a fourth season has just started a couple of days ago in the UK. The show that I am talking about is “The IT Crowd.” Set in a dingy basement of Reynholm Industries in the UK, the show describes the shenanigans of Moss, Roy, and Jen as members of the IT department. My all time favorite is Moss, the tech genius who wears his afro look with a part and his trousers too short. Brilliant humor for those that appreciate some caustic nerdiness. I cannot wait!

Oma’s paintings are on exhibit…

Finally, we got it done. Oma’s Web site and paintings are up. While the Web site is virtually located at www.gisellesart.com, her paintings are on display at two locations in Houston. First, there is the wonderful Belgian restaurant, Jaennine’s Bistro on 106 Westheimer that shows 11 beautiful paintings of hers, and second, there is the lovely Sonoma Wine Bar, 2720 Richmond, displaying four.

For those, that still have not heard the story of “Oma” (German for “grandma”), here it is. Giselle Schubert, born about 79 years ago in Germany, moved to the U.S. in her early 20s. Ever since, Giselle has been painting. Until recently, Oma was able to work as a nanny. Having no family left on her own, she was a loving “Oma” to numerous households in Houston. Then dementia happened.

Nowadays, Oma is still able to paint; but unfortunately, she cannot work as a nanny anymore, and mastering life is getting more and more difficult and even more expensive. Putting her artwork on display, virtually and physically, is our fundraising idea in order to prolong her independence in her own apartment. So if you like her paintings and would like to buy one, let me know. By doing so, you are not only supporting a great artist and vivacious woman, but you are also keeping some excellent stories alive… like the one story with the pink hair involved…

Tire mathematics

Ever wondered what a run flat tubeless tire is? Well, I have four of these, out of which one caused my dashboard to go red yesterday. What to do? Should be easy to figure out, but tires are miraculously cryptic in their description. Ever wondered what it means to have a 225/45 r17 tire specification. Here we go:

225 is the width (or depth) of the tire in millimeters, i.e., 22.5 cm

45 is the ratio between the sidewall height (the black part of the tire) and the width; in my case the sidewalls are apparently 10 cm (math: .45*225 = 101.25)

17 is the rim’s diameter (the metal part) in inches, i.e, approximately 43 cm

At least now I understand that buying a 225/45 r18 would not fit, would it?

A developed view to look at the world

Captured as a TED talk, Hans Rosling discusses our view of the world that differentiates between the Western world and the developing world, or “between them and us.” In his opening statement, Hans Rosling provocatively asks the question: “Does your mindset correpond to my dataset? If not, one or the other needs upgrading.” Using historical data about population, infant mortality rates, life expectancy, number of children, etc. , Rosling points out that developing countries show the same pattern of development that our Western world underwent over the last centuries–with the exception that the developing world does so much faster. The talk is an interesting discussion about our perception of the Western world being about a long life and a small family while developing countries are about a short life and a big family. TED is nonprofit organization, set out to promote “Ideas Worth Spreading” from three areas: technology, entertainment, and design. Their talks are not only entertaining, but first and foremost eye-opening and inspiring. Ranging around 15 minutes per video clip, TED talks are tackling the most current, and most novel, findings in human and non-human history. One of the most recent talks that relates to the field of Information Systems is Pattie Maes’ and Pranav Mistry’s demo about SixthSense, a fascinating technology that might change our life.
